Associated Problems of Feeding Disorder in Children

A Feeding disorder is when children refuse to eat certain food groups, textures, solids or liquids. These disorders can cause them to not be able to gain enough weight or grow naturally. Children attempting to swallow different food textures often vomit, gag, or choke while eating. At feeding times they may react negatively to attempts to feed them, and refuse to eat. Other symptoms include difficulty in chewing or vomiting and spitting whilst eating. Although many children do have common feeding difficulties, it may be they are a picky eater but still have a fairly healthy diet; in a feeding disorder they will completely abandon some of the food groups, textures, or liquids that are necessary for human growth and development.

Children with this disorder can develop much more slowly and can also experience behavioral problem. It is known that in severe cases the child seems to feel socially isolated. Infancy or early childhood feeding disorders are shown by the failure to eat enough food to grow normally, usually one month or longer. Feeding disorders do not have a medical or physiological condition that will be able to explain the very small amount of food they consume, or their lack of growth.

Associated problems

A few of the medical and psychological conditions that have been known to be associated with this disorder include:

  • Gastrointestinal motility disorders
  • Oral-motor dysfunction
  • Failure to thrive
  • Prematurity
  • Food allergies
  • Behavior management issues

A child that is suffering from malnutrition can have permanently stunted mental and physical development. Getting treatment early is essential and can prevent many of the complications. They can also develop further eating disorders later in life such as anorexia, or they could become a limited eater—though they could still be a healthy child they may become a picky eater.
